ANNA’S STORY - a Tribute to Love:
Life is a wonderful teacher, if one is of a mind to learn. It can be harsh, unforgiving, cruel. It can also be rewarding, inspiring and uplifting. Above all it is a journey we all must make.
We can’t determine our coming to this earth, often we can have little say in the manner and timing of our departure. But, to a certain extent we can choose how we travel along the road.
All my pharmacy training was about finding remedies, cures and treatments. However, there are some things which can’t be fixed.
As I lived with and watched Anna’s struggle, as her optimism gradually eroded to despair, as her stoicism became punctuated with bouts of rage and frustration, as she finally succumbed to the terrible inevitability of what was happening, I reluctantly realized that there comes a time when it is alright to cease a battle which can’t be won. Through Anna’s illness and by her example I learned acceptance.
Why ‘Anna’s Story, a Tribute to Love’?
My decision for this book was influenced by many factors.
Firstly, it was a catharsis for my grief; secondly I believed my children and grand-children should know and thus develop understanding of what love truly is; thirdly I felt there are many others in society who are facing the dilemmas and tragedies of terminal diseases and I hope that, perhaps, Anna’s tale might help them also find acceptance.
Finally, it is my tribute to a marvellous woman who shared, changed and so enriched my life.
